If you are thinking of buying a Maksutov, you may wish to consider the UPGRADED OMC-140. The optics are all hand crafted to achieve a previously unattained performance in a telescope of this aperture. The secret of the telescope's exceptional performance lies in the computer optimised design - no compromises have been taken in the production of this quality product. The majority of Maksutov made today, all have spherical surfaces. Designs utilising all spherical surfaces which use a small section of the reverse side of the corrector as the secondary mirror, cannot and will not produce images as good as an Aspheric system - as in the OMC-140. The reason they are made and left spherical is to enable them to be mass produced on relatively simple polishing machines. In the OMC-140, all surfaces are Laser Interferometer tested and hand figured to achieve excellent image quality. Particular attention is taken with the primary, which has a strong aspheric curve introduced by skilled opticians in the workshop.
The manufacturers believe they have designed and built a telescope to optically out-perform absolutely anything of comparable design, anywhere in the world. The Baffle System is an extremely important factor in the telescope's design. If any stray light - reflected or refracted - is passed to the telescope's image, the contrast of the image suffers greatly. The obvious result of this is a visible white haze around objects being viewed. The optical technicians producing the corrector plates, test each surface over 10 times with a Zygo interferometer to achieve a surface accuracy of better than 1/16th wave peak to valley.
